One of the used techniques is Appropriate Paper Based Technology (APBT). It is a technology developed in Zimbabwe. Imagination and knowledge of the basic techniques convert recycled materials such as waste paper, cardboard boxes and corrugated cardboard boxes to produce individually designed furniture, toys and assistive devices for people with disabilities. APBT procedures are extremely simple and have the potential to revolutionise the production of assistive devices traditionally fabricated from wood, leather, metal and other expensive media. As APBT uses ‘free’ materials, the technology is accessible for all income groups. Another major advantage is that it can be made to the individual needs of the children with disabilities – good fitting and positioning tailored for each child.

Good positioning is a crucial factor when working and living with children with disabilities. It enhances better posture and body alignment and improves participation in daily activities and learning.

Three SEP therapists and three fathers of children with disabilities have been trained to work with the APBT. SEP has hired a full-time Occupational Therapist who is specialized in hand therapy and trained in making splints, to manage the day-to-day running of the workshop. In time we hope to expand this workshop to be able to supply children in need with appropriate assistive devices and adapted furniture.
