Three SEP team members departed early from Nairobi and arrived in Hargeisa just before noon, where we were warmly welcomed by the Ubad Gargaar team at the airport. Right from the start, their hospitality made us feel at home.

The first two days were all about settling in — exploring the center where we’d be working and getting to know the staff, the children, and their caregivers.

Starting on day three, our schedule became intensive. Mornings were dedicated to training teaching staff who work with children with autism, ADHD, and Down syndrome. In the afternoons, we focused on training caregivers and staff supporting children with cerebral palsy. The sessions were hands-on and highly practical. In between trainings, we made equipment and toys, which we then used during the sessions — that really brought everything to life.

We focused on how to use assistive devices properly and how to adapt them to fit each child’s individual needs. We also spent time expanding on the use of toys and educational materials, showing how these tools can support both learning and development in simple, creative ways. Each day was packed from morning to evening, leaving us tired but fulfilled. We ended our days early, recharging for the next. Despite the busy schedule, we enjoyed moments of connection with our new colleagues over camel meat, camel milk, and delicious fresh juices.

After ten days, we departed, leaving behind an energized and committed team ready to continue the work. A heartfelt thank you to the Ubad Gargaar team for their excellent organization and warm hospitality!
